August 24, 2017 - There are just eight races remaining for drivers in the Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Model ranks after last weekend’s events at Lucas Oil Speedway and Missouri State Fair Speedway, where drivers raced at the ‘Historic Half Mile’ speedway to close out the 2017 Missouri State Fair. When the last checkered flags fell on the events, Aaron Marrant came away with the victory at Lucas Oil Speedway while Todd Shute of Des Moines, Iowa etched his name into the winner’s column to close out the ULMA weekend in Sedalia.

At Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday, Aaron Marrant posted a dominating win over current ULMA point’s leader Cody Holtkamp. The Late Model main event ran caution-free as Marrant’s victory at Lucas Oil Speedway is his fourth overall ULMA win of the season. The point standings revealed this week reveal that Marrant is closing in on Holtkamp for the championship with just eight points-earning races let on the season, including this weekend’s final championship night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Finishing behind Marrant and Holtkamp last Saturday were Johnny Fennewald, Lane Ehlert, and Kaeden Cornell. Marrant, Larry Jones, and Ehlert claimed the wins in the preliminary heat races.

Sunday evening at the Historic Half mile in Sedalia, 19 drivers signed in to help end the 2017 Missouri State Fair. Three heat races were contested for the drivers on hand with Todd Shute dominating heat one over Tommy Cordray and Jason Russell. Shad Badder motored to the win in heat two over Aaron Marrant and Ryan Petersheim. The third and final heat went to Todd McCoin, Dustin Walker, and Cody Holtkamp.

Todd McCoin and Dustin Walker led the field to the green with Todd Shute and Shad Badder in tow to start the 20-lap main event. McCoin was strong in the early stages of the event as Walker, Badder, and Shute battled for positions inside the top three. McCoin was hooked up through the initial stages of the race but Shute quickly asserted himself as the man to beat as the laps wore down in the 20-lap event.

Meanwhile, Marrant, Jason Russell, and Chris Smyser raced their way into the top five during the second half of the event as McCoin lost the handle on his machine. Inside of three laps to go, a caution regrouped and bunched the field for a final showdown as Marrant was strong on the restart and moved to the inside to challenge Shute for the win for the final three laps. Despite heavy pressure from Marrant, Shute prevailed and claimed the victory.

In victory lane, an elated Shute said, “My fair track in Iowa recently closed down, it sure is nice to look up into this grandstand and see all these people here tonight.” Shute’s comments drew a huge roar and round of applause from the appreciative and enthusiastic crowd. Marrant ultimately finished second with Jason Russell advancing through the field to take third. Dustin Walker ran strong all race long and finished fourth with former track champion Chris Smyser rounding out the top five to bring the ULMA race weekend to a close.
