July 5, 2017 - Last Thursday evening, Johnny Fennewald of Appleton City, Missouri raced his way to his third Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Model victory of the season. Fennewald’s victory came during the special Thursday evening program at the speedway and earned the driver a cool $1,000 payday. The race also served as the opening event of the “Double-Down Showdown,” a two-race mini-series held at Lucas Oil Speedway and Lakeside Speedway.

Fennewald’s latest victory did not come easy as he and Aaron Poe battled hard for the victory, especially over the last five laps of the event. Poe led the first portion of the race until third-starting Fennewald caught him and ultimately made the pass for the win after the pair swapped the lead several times. The drivers raced hard but clean during the closing stages in what may go down as the feature event of the year (so far).

Youngster Kaeden Cornell of Willard, Missouri continued to impress onlookers and fellow drivers and scored a third place finish in the event. Chris Cox of Jefferson City had a solid run and came away fourth while tenth-starting Shane Essary made his way to fifth at the finish. Rounding out the top ten were Jon Melloway, Dylan Hoover, Tommy Cordray, Daniel Jessen, and current ULMA point’s leader Cody Holtkamp with the comeback run of the night as he advanced from 19th to 10th at the finish.
